EVERY year hundreds of topics are discussed in the council chamber.

Many that we may consider important issues get a free ride, especially those championed by big business.

Of late MBC have seen fit to cancel meetings for lack of any agenda, which is somewhat surprising even for an authority on the way out.

Amazingly, when it came to appointing honorary aldermen the chamber suddenly sparked into life with Labour Councillor Gill Boston apoplectic about the term ‘alderman’.

"I struggle with the continuing problem of gender bias," she erupted.

So, where was that fire when it was needed to prevent breweries bringing drunken mayhem to our town centres or stop outrageous pay offs to retiring execs?

Had the Labour party shown some of that fighting spirit for more important causes maybe they wouldn’t have been wiped out at the local elections!
