THE STEP-GRANDSON of Sir Alex Ferguson was left fighting for his life after an horrific car collision.

Ten-year-old Charlie Metcalfe suffered serious injuries when the black Vauxhall Corsa his mother Nadine was driving collided with a red Ford Fiesta on Trap Street in Lower Withington, Macclesfield.

The collision happened just hours before Sir Alex’s Reds were set to take the field in a vital Champions League semi final in London.

Nadine, 30, is the ex-wife of Sir Alex’s son, Darren. She was airlifted to Wythenshawe hospital and was said to be in a serious condition. Charlie was taken to Leighton hospital and later transferred to Alder Hey children’s hospital.

The couple’s six-year-old daughter, Grace, was also in the car. She suffered chest and head injuries and was also taken to hospital. She was said to be ‘comfortable’.

The collision happened at 8.25am yesterday. The 17-year-old driver of the Fiesta, from the local area, was cut free from the wreckage by the fire service. He was taken to Macclesfield District General Hospital with leg injuries. (Tue)

It is understood Sir Alex was informed as his team prepared for last night’s crucial clash with Arsenal.

Nadine, from Royton, Oldham, married Darren in 2003. They separated in 2007. In April he was fined after attacking her on Sir Alex’s drive in a row over the children. Darren, who remarried last week, is manager of League One Peterborough United. They recently clinched promotion to the Championship. He was travelling up to the area last night.

A friend of the family said Nadine’s father Les had been told about the crash and was flying over from Portugal.

The road was closed and reopened at 1.45pm.
