Fallibroome academy welcomed an explorer, journalist, and climate expert at its specialist youth event.

The guests were invited to take part in the TEDx Youth@Manchester conference, an event organised by Fallibroome Academy, in conjunction with the non-profit organisation Technology, Entertainment, Design (TED), which is devoted to providing a platform for schools and businesses to share ideas.

Around 450 students and teachers from Fallibroome and other schools, including All Hallows Catholic College, Macclesfield Academy, Eaton Bank, Congleton High School and Chetham’s School of Music, came together to hear talks and artistic performances reflecting the theme of ‘Perspective’.

The five guest speakers at this year’s conference were Alastair Campbell, former Director of Communications for the Labour Government, Everest Mountaineer and National Geographic film maker Matt Dickinson, political and economic journalist for Scandanavia’s biggest daily newspaper, Katrine Marçal, English lecturer, Dr Sophie Coulombeau and Professor of Climate Science and Energy Policy Dr Alice Bows-Larkin.

Student speakers at the event were Rory Walker, Georgia Parkes-Russell, Charlotte Hammer, Naomi Kershaw, Corinne Salt, Charlotte White, James Chasty, Sam Thomas and Ellie Payne,

The short talks were interspersed with TED Talks videos, video shorts and musical entertainment from Fallibroome students Jodie Buckland and Eliza Beresford, and Chetham’s student Vladimir Anisimov.

The morning was brought to a close by the the Buffalo Brothers.

During the afternoon, Fallibroome students were given the opportunity to attend workshops run by the speakers and made best use of time with the experts debating subjects as wide ranging as feminism, climate change, identity, mental health and leadership.

Peter Rubery, Fallibroome’s executive principal, said: “We are honoured to be part of the remarkable TED Community and create such wonderful opportunities for our students to engage with the TED mission to spread ideas. All our speakers and performers were very impressive and the feedback we have received confirmed that this was a very special event.”
