A fallen tree caused traffic chaos in Macclesfield this morning.

Police were called at 5.49am to reports of a large tree blocking both sides of Oxford Road near All Hallows School.

Officers found the tree had toppled from the front garden of a house through a wall and into the carriageway.

The impact of the fall had split the trunk of the tree in two.

No one was hurt by the incident.

Police closed off the road and diversions were put in place as commuters began heading out onto the town's roads.

Cheshire East Council's highways team organised a tree surgeon.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said the tree and debris were cleared by 8am and the road reopened.

Traffic is expected to be busier than usual until congestion eases later this morning.

There were heavy, blustery showers overnight in parts of Macclesfield. These are expected to continue through the day with sunny spells but there is a risk of hail and thunder.
