Community leaders are urging residents to take part in an extra six-week consultation on the Local Plan.

Cheshire East has launched the consultation on the plan which sets out development until 2030, despite government planning minister Nick Boles saying it’s flawed.

The draft plan, known as the Core Strategy, also includes areas of green belt for development after 2030, known as safeguarded land.

In Wilmslow , this includes land at Upcast Lane and Cumber Lane and another site off Prestbury Road, as well as some of the land set out for a new settlement east of the Handforth bypass.

Mr Boles said in a parliamentary debate that councils should not be safeguarding land, and is calling in one of his experts to help Cheshire East get its plan right. The ruling came at a difficult time for the council, which signed off its extra consultation just days later.

Councillors Barry Burkhill and Dennis Mahon, for Handforth, have urged residents to take part and will be at Handforth Library on Saturdays from 11am to 1pm.

MP George Osborne would not state whether he has joined Macclesfield MP David Rutley, Congleton MP Fiona Bruce and Crewe MP Ed Timpson in making a formal request for the planning inspector to attend. The consultation runs until December 16. Documents can be viewed at cheshireeast.gov.uk/localplan or at libraries.
