Four friends are hitting ‘la route’ in style in the name of charity by riding vintage mopeds from Macclesfield to Monaco.

Phil Guy, 38, of Congleton Road, Gawsworth, and his pals will cruise 1,100 miles on the 20-year-old Honda C90s in aid of Cancer Research UK.

The quartet, who aim to reach the south of France in time for this year’s Monaco Grand Prix on May 16, were inspired by the hit TV show The Long Way Round.

Phil said: "We were originally going to go from Land’s End to John O’ Groats but we realised that we were only going to get wet for a weekend so we decided to go a bit further afield – and there is only one place to watch a Formula one Grand Prix. I am very fortunate not to have anyone in my family die of cancer but I have lost friends. It is something that is at the forefront of everyones’ minds," he added.

His team-mates on the trek, which leaves on May 8, will be Tim Stagg, 38, of Charlotte Street, Macclesfield; Paul Roberts, also 38, from Hazel Grove; and 22-year-old Rick Hall, from Bollington.

"Our route is absolutely straight through France. We aren’t going on any motorways, only A roads." said Phil.

The riders will be camping their way across the country and aim to raise £5,000 for the charity. They also want to thank their sponsors including Robinson’s Breweries and Michelin Tyres.
