What Women Want is their name and a group of five women are keen to show that girl power can raise serious money for East Cheshire Hospice.

Despite all working full time, they have set an ambitious target of raising £25,000 for the Hospice this year, a total chosen to coincide with the charity’s 25th anniversary.

“We like to put the fun in fundraising,” said chairwoman Jayne Carter, a company director for Redmont Packaging.

“We came up with the name in the back of a taxi one night when we were fed up with going to balls where the prizes were always golf days for men or football shirts,” she added.

Four years later What Women Want has raised £75,000 for East Cheshire Hospice and now wants to reach the six-figure mark in this milestone year for the charity.

A programme of fundraising includes bingo and race nights with the flagship event a What Women Want Ball – men are invited – at Cranage Hall, Holmes Chapel, on Friday, November 15.

Also on the committee are HR manager Jo Millward, work placement officer Julie Barnes, and hospice employees Elaine Burgess, an administrator, and nurse Jill Harding.

Jayne said: “Some of the best ideas are born after a few gin and tonics but our underlying passion is the hospice.

“It’s a fabulous place and we all believe in trying to help this wonderful charity as much as we can.”
