A drunk man smashed the window at a Wilmslow church and stole the fire extinguisher.

Ikrar Malik, 20, had been drinking with friends in Wilmslow before walking through the grounds of Wilmslow United Reformed Church on Chapel Lane.

Macclesfield magistrates heard that Malik, of Bowdon Avenue, Fallowfield, smashed a window with a brick and went inside with his friend before taking the extinguisher worth £80 and setting it off outside.

The damage to the window cost £318 to repair.

Malik pleaded guilty to theft, criminal damage and failing to surrender to the court on February 9.

After the hearing The Reverend Kirsty Thorpe, of the United Reformed Church, said church members found the mess the next morning.

She said:  “Vandalism like this is always annoying because it’s unnecessary and raises our insurance costs.

“It’s good to know in this case police tracked down those responsible.”

Prosecuting, Shilpa Chauhan said: “He was under the influence of alcohol and couldn’t remember the incident.

“He had been with a friend who was not feeling well and taken him to the church to lie on the sofa.

“He saw the extinguisher and sprayed it outside.  He fully admitted the offence.”

Malik also admitted charges of damaging cars near East Didsbury Station and possessing a razor blade in the Arndale shopping centre in Manchester.

The court heard Malik committed the offences while serving a community order.

Defending, Asim Ali said: “This is a young man who committed no offence until he was 19 and has taken some wrong decisions. He attended today and pleaded guilty and has cooperated with police.

“The running theme here is alcohol. He’s not using this as an excuse but there are clearly issues with this young man and we need to think how to resolve this. He should be given a final chance to comply with the court orders.”

The chairman of the bench Ian Cawley adjourned sentence until March 9 for a probation report.

He said: “You’ve had this opportunity before and we are taking the unusual step to give it again.

“You must address the alcohol issue.”
