Work to repair parts of Macclesfield’s energy network will cause disruptions to both drivers and walkers over the summer.

Traffic along London Road will be reduced to a single lane for the next 10 weeks while National Grid replaces 750 metres of a major gas main with a plastic pipe, with temporary traffic lights in operation.

Prestbury Lane will be closed completely from Monday, August 13, for seven weeks.

A section of the Bollin Valley Riverside Park will be closed off to walkers in late August as a result of the ÂŁ22billion refurbishment scheme.

This is to enable engineers access to the overhead lines between Daines, near Manchester, and Macclesfield.

Walkers will be diverted away from areas closest to the towers and where the lines over sail the path, but the new routes will not be suitable for prams or wheelchair users.

William Fenton, project manager said: "We know this is a well used recreational area and have been working with the Bollin Valley Partnership and the local authorities to put alternative signed walking routes in place, but unfortunately because of the layout of the land, it does mean the alternative routes aren’t suitable for either pushchairs or wheelchairs for this short period of time.

"We would ask people to be patient with us and we’ll do everything we can to get our work completed as quickly as possible."

He added: "We appreciate that the closure is inconvenient, particularly as we’re having to work on the towers during the school holidays, but we would stress that our work is vital and means that people will be able to continue to rely on having energy at their finger tips whenever they want it."
