A shaken driver told how he was seconds from death after thugs hurled a boulder from a bridge into the path of his car.

The large rock smashed into Sunny Chohan’s VW Golf during a late night attack as he drove home through Alderley Edge.

The 22-year-old student – who branded the offenders ‘lunatics’ – narrowly escaped injury along with his friend.

But the car will cost hundreds of pounds to repair.

Mr Chohan, who lives in Manchester, was one of two motorists targeted on the same stretch of the A34 bypass in a weekend.

A day earlier a heavy stone landed on the road and hit a BMW 5 series around midnight, leaving it with extensive damage to the front bumper.

Again, the driver narrowly avoided injury.

Mr Chohan, a Staffordshire University student who lives on Mauldeth Road, Fallowfield, told the Express: “As I was coming up to the bridge I saw something fall down from it.

“I tried to swerve away from it but I was too close. I suddenly felt the car jump upwards and I had to pull over.

“I’m grateful because if it had been a few seconds later, it would have gone through the window and one of us could have died.

“I really hope they catch who did this.

“They may think it’s a joke, but it was very close to taking my life and there could have been a child in the car rather than me.”

Police confirmed the offenders threw the rocks – believed to be a foot wide – from an overpass at Welsh Row on Congleton Road in two separate incidents at midnight on Saturday and 10pm the following day.

It was lucky that neither of the drivers was injured or killed, police said.

Sgt Alex McMillan from Wilmslow NPU said: “Whoever did this clearly didn’t think about the seriousness of their actions, this could have easily resulted in a fatality.”

He added: “We are asking people to be vigilant whilst we investigate this incident, and if you have seen anyone acting suspiciously on any bridge over the A34 bypass please contact us.”

Any witnesses should contact PC Kos Georgas on the new police number 101, or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
