The death of a man on railway near Alderley Edge this morning is not being treated as suspicious, police say.

Emergency services were called to the line just before 10am on Sunday.

A man was reported to have been hit by an Arriva Trains service travelling from Manchester Piccadilly to Cardiff.

Police and paramedics both attended the scene at 9.54am where a man was found to have been fatally injured.

He was pronounced dead at the scene .

The man’s age is not known and his identity has not been made public.

The incident caused long delays for train services travelling out of Manchester Piccadilly while police completed investigations at the scene.

Virgin Trains, Arriva Trains Wales, Cross Country and Northern Rail all reported delays.

Routes affected included those between Manchester Piccadilly and Crewe.

Trains were prevented from stopping at Wilmslow and Alderley Edge stations, with a bus service in operation instead.

Services began to get back to normal after 11.30am when police finished their investigations at the scene.

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesman said: “BTP officers were called to the line close to Alderley Edge railway station, Cheshire, on Sunday 1st March, 2015, after a report that a person had been struck by a train.

“Officers from BTP and Cheshire Police attended the incident, which was reported to police at 09.54 hours and is currently being treated as non-suspicious.

“Paramedics from the Cheshire Ambulance Service also attended but the male was pronounced dead at the scene.

“A file will be prepared for the coroner.”
