Drivers face disruption this week as Cheshire East Council carrys out improvement work on the A523 Silk Road.

That means the major road through Macclesfield will be closed overnight between the Tesco roundabout in Macclesfield and the Flash Lane roundabout in Prestbury.

It will close completely between 7pm and 5am for three nights, from today (March 18) to Friday March 20.

During the closure, diversions will be signposted via: Tesco roundabout, Silk Road/A523; A537; Beech Lane/A538; London Road/B5091; Flash Lane roundabout, Silk Road/A523.

Emergency access will be maintained at all times as will pedestrian access to all premises, and access for residents will be maintained where possible.

Traffic safety officers will also be positioned at various points on the road to assist motorists as traffic disruption will be unavoidable.

The council says that the night-time working will minimise disruption by enabling contractors to complete the project more quickly, and will significantly improve road safety with better road markings and studs as well as repairs to safety fencing, existing signage and street lights. Vegetation will also be cut back, drainage pits cleaned and litter cleared.

Councillor David Topping, Cabinet member for service commissioning said: “This work will make the road safer for the travelling public and is part of our continual commitment to maintaining and improving our highways.

“Unfortunately, there will be some unavoidable disruption and we thank businesses, residents and road users in advance for their patience and understanding.”
