Congratulations to John Dwyer, Cheshire’s new Police Commissioner. It’s a huge job with great potential for transforming the way we are policed.

Mr Dwyer’s experience as an ex assistant chief constable will be invaluable providing he uses it wisely and does not get absorbed into the system. If there is one thing we don’t need it’s the old boys’ act.

Police forces throughout the country have used it to obfuscate every major blunder losing any semblance of public confidence.

I’ve witnessed the Police Commissioner system in the US and while no policing model is perfect this one seems to work for the people better than the old buck-passing system.

In this new set up there will be no room to hide should things go wrong. It will be all down to Mr Dwyer.

I wish him success.
