RECORD numbers turned out at the weekend to pay their respects to those who lost their lives in conflicts.

Members of the community together with war veterans and serving members of the armed forces gathered to pay tribute to fallen heroes at remembrance services in Wilmslow and Alderley Edge.

More than 250 people packed Wilmslow Parish Church for a Remembrance Sunday service led by vicar Canon Tony Sparham.

Gleaning medals and scarlet poppies were pinned to blazers of war veterans and current servicemen as the Alderley and District Scout Band led the parade from the Royal British legion Club in Grove Avenue to St Bartholomew's Church.

After the service, the procession continued to the Remembrance Garden where civic guest of honour and deputy mayor Coun Barry Burkhill was the first to lay a wreath on behalf of Macclesfield borough council.

He commented:

"There were a lot of people probably due to the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"There were a big cross section of ages and lot of wreaths were laid.

"Tony Sparham gave a really good sermon.

"It was very poignant."
