Hundreds of churchgoers danced in the aisles in a filmed farewell to their village vicar.

The congregation of St Christopher’s Church in Pott Shrigley made a music video as part of a celebration weekend to thank Reverend John Buckley and his wife Christine, who are leaving the church after 14 years.

Rev Buckley retired as priest in charge and Christine left her post as lay reader to join St George’s Church in Poynton as curate.

The film, featuring young and old parishioners, was screened at a ‘This is your Life’ style event at the church over the weekend.

David Garton, church warden, said: “It starts in a fairly sombre mood before really livening up to show whole sections of the church and community dancing down the aisle to Dario G’s late 90s club hit ‘Sunchyme’. It was great fun to make, especially seeing people you wouldn’t expect enjoying music of this sort.” He added that John and Christine would be missed.

Rev Buckley said: “We started a normal service, then the screen came down. I knew something was wrong when I saw the sedate introduction and then there it was.”
