A LADIES choir will say farewell to its popular conductor at an upcoming concert.

Singers from Macclesfield Mydel Ladies Choir will perform some of their favourites from over the years at the concert at Sutton St James Church.

The show will be the last for musical director Sheila Kent who will retire after 18 years. It was Sheila’s aunt Dorothy Mellor who started the choir in the 1940s.

She will retire to spend more time on her work judging choirs at competitions among other things.

Viv Warrington, choir secretary who lives in Langley, said: “It will be a farewell to Sheila who we will be sad to see go.

“But it should be a good send-off with lots of our favourite songs from over the years.

“We hope people will come along to our concert.

“It will be good to get the church lively again and it will be a celebration for Sheila.”

The choir will perform Christmas songs in the second half of the concert which will feature a performance by singing duo The Fun Guys.

Visitors will also be greeted by the Sutton Handbell Ringers.

The Mydel choir has 30 members from Macclesfield and its surrounding villages.

Viv said: “The choir has been going for a long time. We still have one of the original members in her 80s, but are always on the lookout for new and younger members.

“Singing is really good for you, it help with stress and is lovely to perform for people.”

The concert is on Sunday, December 7 at 2pm. A collection will go to East Cheshire Hospice.

Tickets cost £6 from 01625 511910 or any choir member.
