Dozens of motorists were arrested by police under a summer drink-driving crackdown.

New figures from Cheshire Police show 112 drivers were arrested in just one month, including four from Wilmslow.

Seven motorists were also found to be under the influence of drugs by roadside impairment tests.

Analysis of the figures shows there were fewer arrests than last year – 156 – despite more breath tests – 2,017 – being carried out during this year’s summer operation.

Overall, men under 30 continue to be the main offenders, although arrests for the group were down by almost a third on last year.

Ruth Purdie, assistant chief constable, praised the tenacity of her officers.

She said: “By stepping up enforcement measures, this has allowed us to take a hard line on drink and drug driving by identifying those motorists who are still not heeding our warnings.”

John Dwyer, Cheshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, said he was heartened by the drop.

He said: “It’s clear that whilst certain people across Cheshire have ignored the ‘don’t drink or drug drive message’, I’m delighted to see that lots of people have taken heed and listened.”

Drivers were also tested for being under the influence of drugs. Across the  county 18 drug driving tests were carried out and seven arrests made.

Dave Murray, road safety officer, said: “Many young people I speak to genuinely believe that certain drugs – mainly cannabis and stimulants make you a safer driver; this is a myth.”
