The Cheshire Building Society will be lost from the town for good when Nationwide rebranding plans complete next week.

Nationwide took over the Cheshire in December 2008 and has been working on rebranding it with the Nationwide name. Over the weekend of Friday, October 3 until Sunday, October 5 all Cheshire bank accounts will move to Nationwide.

The Cheshire name and its black cat logo will disappear entirely and branches will close or merge with Nationwide branches.

In Macclesfield, the Nationwide branch on Chestergate will close and staff will move into the current Cheshire branch on Castle Street, rebranded as Nationwide.

The loss of the Cheshire name from the town is significant because its headquarters were based over the road on Castle Street for many years, from the mid 1970s until 2011.

MP David Rutley said: “It’s sad to see the well-known Cheshire Building Society name leaving Macclesfield town centre forever.

“It’s a brand that has been warmly regarded by many and part of our heritage for many years.

“I have been assured that customers will be able to access the services they need from Nationwide.”

No former Cheshire employees are being made redundant in Macclesfield.

Tony Prestedge, chief operating officer at Nationwide, said: “In March we announced we were in a position to ensure our members under the Cheshire brand could have full access to the benefits, services and products Nationwide provides. The next step is to integrate our businesses under one strong and nationally recognisable brand.”
