WHAT a result! Christmas came early as a charity's festive bash brought in more brass than ever before...and broke a national record.

Results, a charity committed to ending world poverty, had a fund raiser at AstraZeneca's Haigh Arms which brought in a cool £5,650.

A delighted Sanjay Vaja, who runs the local branch, and works at the pharmaceuticals giant, said: "This is the most raised for Results by any of the 18 groups in the UK.

"It was a great night out and hopefully people were touched, moved and inspired by the evening.

"We wanted people to learn about our charity, and we succeeded. And everyone had heaps of fun and did lots of dancing."

Sanjay, who is 26 and lives in Tyrtherington, has flown to the World Bank twice and has worked with heavyweight politicians in the Government, European Union and America to get his message across.

But he also knows how crucial it is to keep the money coming in, which keeps the charity afloat.

Sanjay, a technical officer at AstraZeneca, said: "Our aim is to end hunger and poverty.

"Results tries to influence key decision makers, like MPs, and show them what issues they should be looking at.

"Poverty causes so many preventable diseases, and 29,000 children die from them everyday.

"Unless the developed world works to combat poverty those diseases, such as malaria and TB, will continue to spread and we can't let that happen."

Sanjay said the fund raising evening was free, and people were only asked to donate what they felt Results deserved.

Bands played for free and included The Brighouse Trio, the Family Band, and ReSouled - which Sanjay plays guitar in - and they all went down a treat.

Macclesfield Results's next meeting is on Tuesday, January 15. For more information please call 01625 516313.
