New CCTV cameras are to be installed at a site where a man was hospitalised following an attack in the street.

Residents called for increased safety measures in the dark underpass at Water’s Green following the incident in April.

Now the council has promised two new CCTV cameras to be installed in the next few weeks.

It’s part of a £1m regeneration scheme to revitalise the town centre, improve public safety and reduce anti-social behaviour. The first phase of work involved cutting back vegetation and landscaping and give clear views along the Middlewood Way, other planned works include deep cleaning, graffiti removal and a review of all lighting.

Council leader Michael Jones said: “The work done so far is a big improvement and has really smartened up the Waters Green area.

“In view of recent concerns about improving safety, lighting will be high on the agenda and a number of options are being considered. We are looking at significantly enhancing the lighting in the underpass and our regeneration team is also looking at other projects to dramatically improve the local environment – and that of the wider town centre.
