A fundraising campaign launched in memory of a young woman killed in a car crash has raised thousands of pounds.

Aspiring actress Sophie Spencer, 24, was fatally injured when her car hit a tree in Over Alderley.

Her devastated family including dad Peter, mum Lena and brothers Scott, 21, (pictured) and Alex, 18, launched a campaign via the website www.justgiving.com/sophielouisespencer to support the charity When You Wish Upon A Star, which grants the wishes of children with life threatening illnesses.

Although launched only two weeks ago the campaign has raised more than £2,100.

Speaking at the family home on St Austell Avenue, Macclesfield, Sophie's mum Lena, 52, said the campaign would help fulfil Sophie’s dream posthumously.

She said: “Sophie loved children so much and had written in her journal that some day when she had achieved her dreams of becoming a film star she would use her passion and energy to help those less fortunate.

“That dream summed up what kind of person she was.

“We know that Sophie would be so pleased knowing that something positive can come from this tragedy in her name.

“So please donate and let’s make a child smile in Sophie’s memory.”

The idea for the campaign came from Sophie’s brothers, who said they would remember their sister as open-minded and compassionate.

Sophie first started to take centre stage when she was just two-years-old, singing, dancing and acting for her family. But she found the love of entertaining a wider audience on family holidays.

Sophie developed her love of performing at Upton Priory Primary School then Fallibroome Academy. She won numerous singing competitions in Macclesfield and further afield.

She even made a spontaneous appearance at the Alderley Edge Christmas lights event the Thursday before her death.

But it was her love of acting that she shaped her dream of becoming a film star. She spent summers with the Co-operative British Youth Film Academy.

After school she studied theatre and performing arts at South Cheshire College.

More recently she was taking a course at the Manchester School of Acting where she starred in numerous short films and even appeared in the hit comedy show Fresh Meat.

While she studied Sophie worked as a beauty consultant and caterer.

The scene of the fatal crash on Macclesfield Road in Over Alderley

Sophie was driving home from her acting class when the collision happened on Macclesfield Road, on Monday, November 24, at about 7.30pm.

Police believe Sophie’s silver Peugeot 206 was overtaking another vehicle before it swerved to avoid a black Fiat Panda travelling in the opposite direction and collided with a tree.

Detectives have renewed their appeal for witnesses.

Investigating Officer PC Paul Burke said: "I would specifically like to appeal to the driver of a vehicle that was in close proximity to Sophie's car when the collision occurred and did not stop at the scene.

"The vehicle was travelling in the same direction as Sophie at the time of the collision and I believe that they may be able to assist us with our enquiries.

"I am also keen to speak to the drivers of a white BMW 1 series and a silver colored Audi A3, which were both seen in the area shortly before the collision occurred."

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or Pc Paul Burke on 01606 364207.
