A businessman has taken his own steps to boost trade by making a sign to promote a free parking scheme.

Motorists have been enjoying free parking after 3pm in Spring Street car park as part of an initiative by Cheshire East Council.

The council is trialling ‘Free after Three’ in seven car parks, including South Street in Alderley Edge.

All-day parkers have also seen costs reduced.

The council has introduced the changes to support businesses and encourage more people to visit the town centre.

Steve Kennedy, of Mail Boxes Etc on Water Lane, which offers packing, printing, office and internet services, welcomed the scheme but thought it needs to be promoted better.

After contacting Cheshire East, he made a vinyl banner to direct shoppers to the car park from Water Lane.

Mr Kennedy said: “I think a lot of people had forgotten about it due to a lack of signage. The free parking really needs promoting on the street for it to be effective and to help retail in the town.

“My reasoning was straightforward; that there is little to be gained in launching a great initiative without marketing and advertising it to the fullest extent.”

Mr Kennedy, a member of Wilmslow Business Group, organised the Wilmslow Motor Show which attracted 30,000 people into the town.

He said: “The sign serves to underline another message, that people and businesses can do things to support their town.

“The town council and Cheshire East will listen if you have a good idea.”

‘Free after Three’ will be reviewed after the six-month trial.
