Bus services across Macclesfield could be victims of council cuts. Cheshire East Council aims to save about £500,000 by withdrawing subsidies from some routes, many of which run to schools.

The changes, recommended at a cabinet meeting, would leave bus operators to decide whether to axe routes or put up fares.

If approved, the cuts will start in the October school half-term.

Children who live too close to schools to qualify for council transport and use public buses instead will be affected.

One route is the 38 from Broken Cross to Gawsworth Primary, which costs £18,410 per year and is used by 900 passengers.

This costs the council more than £20 per head.

The most expensive Macclesfield route up for consideration is the E78 from the Weston

to Fallibroome, which costs the council £43,380 per year, or £4 per person.

A spokesman said: "Even with the proposed subsidy withdrawals, the council will still be supporting more than two

million passenger journeys a year and is committed to budget support of £2.3m a year.

The council will now go into consultation with bus

operators before a full council meeting decision.
