Manchester United legend Bryan Robson has urged fans to turn out for his appearance at a vital fundraising game for Macclesfield Town Football Club.

The 56-year-old is polishing his boots to feature in an All Star Premier League XI featuring a collection of Macclesfield Town legends this Sunday (13 October), kick-off 2pm.

The match at Moss Rose is a desperate bid to raise crucial cash to secure the club’s future.

Robson, pictured, nicknamed Captain Marvel during his time at Old Trafford, is calling for a superhero effort from the town.

He said: “It is really important that the town supports its football club so I would urge fans of the club and the wider community to come down and watch the game.

“I will definitely be turning up to show my support for a team local to me and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Robson was approached to play by former Newcastle United player, Steve Watson, who is putting together the Premier League team.

Others set to play include Denis Irwin, Owen Coyle, Terry Phelan, Ashley Ward, Pascal Chimbonda, Scott Sellars, Frank Sinclair, Ade Akinbiyi, James Beattie, Matt Jansen,  David Thompson, Darren Peacock and Alan Fettis.

It is understood other former Man United legends such as Paul Scholes and Andy Cole have also been invited to play.

They will be playing against much-loved Macclesfield Town legends selected by manager John Askey and assistant Efe Sodje including: Ryan Price, George Abbey, Darren Tinson, Steve Payne, Neil Howarth, Rae Ingram, Danny Adams, Karl Munroe, Steve Wood, Neil Sorvel, Ben Sedgemore, Martin McDonald, Chris Byrne, Richard Barker, Phil Power and Steve Burr.

Andy Scott, associate director,  is urging fans to support the club, which needs to raise £10,000s every month just to stay afloat.

He said: “We are in a perilous and fragile position, living day to day.

“We have a mountain to climb. If we can get through this season, there is no reason why we cannot build a solid future for this club.

“This is a golden opportunity for long-standing fans to come and see arguably the best 16-18 players who have put on the Macclesfield Town shirt in the past 20 years. It’s a one off occasion. For the wider community, we know it’s going to be all about the All Stars.

“Because it is international weekend, there is no football in the top flight. I’d really like to see United and City fans deprived of their team to come on down and support Macclesfield Town.

“Steve Watson has been busy cajoling his mates and got the nod from some top former players. He’ll be working on bringing some other big names to Moss Rose up until Sunday morning.”

A similar fundraiser in 2006, which featured Gianfranco Zola, saw more than 4,000 flock to Moss Rose.

Andy added: “We’ve had a lot of support for this match from everyone at the club, from match day staff to stewards to the media team and office staff donating their time to make the game happen.

“Attendance will be a massive benefit for the club and we hope, like the last All-Stars game in 2006, it will be a great occasion and should be a great day.”
