A brother and sister are getting on their running shoes to raise cash in memory of their mum.

Former nurse Janet Potts died last April aged 76, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

And now her son John, 44, and daughter Sue Nicholls 49, are running the Greater Manchester Run to mark the anniversary of her death.

They are hoping to raise more than £2,000 for the Alzheimer’s Research charity.

They are being joined in the quest by their niece Rachel Wellington, 22, and her boyfriend Matt Bailey, 28.

Janet trained at Macclesfield Infirmary in the 1950s and became ward sister at the hospital.

She also worked at the David Lewis Centre, Mary Dendy and was matron at Nuneham Nursing Home.

However for the last 10 years of her life she was severely affective by Alzheimer’s and required round-the-clock care. Mum-of-one Sue said the family wanted to raise the money to try and prevent others going through what they did. She said: “We wanted to mark the first anniversary of mum’s passing.

“And we wanted it to be something together that we could do together and that we could all achieve.

“The training has been tough but we are all really determined and are really looking forward to the run now.

“Alzheimer’s is not just about an elderly person becoming a little forgetful and confused.

“When Mum was diagnosed it changed our whole lives as a family.

“Every aspect had to be co-ordinated around mum’s care, the majority of which we undertook by ourselves relying on outside help as little as possible as mum found other people increasingly difficult to cope with.”
