A junior karting champ and his mechanic brother tipped to take the Formula One world by storm have the ultimate race this week - in honour of their mum.

Racer Cameron Roberts, 11, and young mechanic Max, 13, compete around the country and this weekend will race at Three Sisters track in Wigan – for a trophy named in honour of their mum who died 18 months ago.

Philippa Roberts, known as Pip, who was 43 when she died, supported the boys’ racing and bought them the van which transports them and their gear to races.

It will be one in a long line of races for Cameron who started karting aged nine as a pupil at Marton Primary School and has won more than 30 trophies.

He enters the 2011 season as the 10th seeded driver in the country and will race in the British Championships, which has seen high profile winners including Lewis Hamilton.

Cameron, of Blackden Lane, Siddington, said: "I love the speed of racing and am quite competitive.

"I want to be a Formula One driver, I know it will be difficult but I am determined – I eat the right things to be as fit as possible.

"It’s good having Max with me and it’s amazing he is so good because he is only young.

"This weekend is important because it’s my mum’s cup and I think I’m in with a good chance."

Max was just 11 when he started helping on the kart.

Dad Stephen, whose third son is Rory, seven, said: "Max has a natural affinity with all things mechanical and has already had job offers and is predicted to be the top mechanic in the country by the time he leaves school.

"Hopefully the boys will be able to pursue their careers.

"We appreciate any support and welcome interested sponsors to get in touch via Cameron’s website."

Pip’s father and the boys’ grandad, Jack Spencer, 88, said: "The boys are absolutely unbelievable, especially considering what happened to their mum.

"I’m just so proud of them."
