Primary school children had a taste of what it’s like to be a professional sportsman or sportswoman when they took to the athletics track for their games day.

It was the first time Bollinbrook Primary School had held its sports day at the Macclesfield Leisure Centre and there was something for everyone thanks to the work of PE teacher Jen Church, who had organised the day.

She contacted the leisure centre after the original idea had been suggested by the school’s sports council.

Every child got the chance to participate in four events, including the ‘howler’ javelin throw and the standing long jump.

Watched by proud parents and grandparents, the students also enjoyed taking part in the classic sports day sprints and long distance runs.

The younger pupils ran 400 metres, while the older students ran 600 metres.

For many students it was the first time they had competed in professional surroundings and they all rose to the challenge while having lots of fun.

Mike Waters, headteacher at Bollinbrook said: “The whole event was terrific and what an opportunity for the children. This has been an amazing sporting year for our school.”
