I see taxpayer-backed bank Lloyds has made a £1.6billion profit in the first half of the year, which is nice.

Well, it would be if they didn’t still owe us so much money. Lloyds still have billions of taxpayers’ cash, so I’d like to get mine back before they start doling out bonuses.

In total British taxpayers ‘loaned’ more than £1trillion to failing banks whose greed and incompetence brought us to our knees. New schools projects have been cancelled, police budgets slashed, thousands lost jobs, homes and businesses in the aftermath.

Is it too much to ask that bank executives hold their greed in check until this debt has been repaid? President Obama capped individual income for the executives of banks still in debt to the US taxpayer. I see no reason why Mr Cameron cannot do likewise.

It’s shameful to see hard-working families struggling to cope while those who orchestrated the greatest financial crisis in 80 years award themselves obscene bonuses.

As any owner of a small business knows there is no hiding place when you cannot repay the bank. They will take your home. No one is going to help you out. There will be no bonuses heading in your direction.

It would be nice to see a little contrition from our bankers instead of the self-satisfied arrogance emanating from the city. A little concern for the taxpaying public who saved their jobs, villas, Porches and yachts wouldn’t go amiss either. What worries me is this: without acceptance of their own failure there can be no learning. Without learning they will inevitably veer off on the same path of greed that led us almost over the brink.

Look, they’re not going to listen so just give us our money back.
