A CAR salesman’s career is in tatters after he was caught drink driving.
Bernard Rooney, 61, a corporate sales manager at BMW based in Crewe, was seen by police swerving along the road after a day at a corporate event, a court heard.
When he was pulled over he was breathalysed, recording a level one a half times over the limit.
Rooney, of Rainow Road, Macclesfield, admitted drink driving at Macclesfield magistrates’ court last Wednesday.
Joanne Clark, prosecuting, said: “Police on patrol on Farm Lane, Lower Withington on June 18 at 10.50pm saw a BMW wavering between the curb lane and the middle of the road, and then crossing the line into the other carriageway.
“The car was stopped and the defendant told officers he had drunk two pints.
“He was breathalysed and recorded 53mg of alcohol. The legal limit is 35mg.”
Magistrates banned Rooney from driving for 14 months.
Claire Aldridge, defending, said the ban would result in Rooney losing his job.
She said: “Mr Rooney is a corporate sales manager at BMW in Crewe for seven years, which makes this offence all the more embarrassing for him.
“Nine days before his arrest he had organised a corporate event, working long days, sometimes from 6am until very late.
“On the day of the offence he had been at a golf club in Winsford where there was a charity auction, which he gave out the prizes for.
“He drank two and half pints of cider over a five hour period and didn’t have much to eat. He is also diabetic.
“He considers himself an accomplished driver.
“His job makes the offence very embarrassing for him. He drives around 40,000 miles per year.
“He is on the road all the time.
“He knows he must pay the price for his actions.
“Ultimately he will lose his job because his job relies so heavily on having a licence.
“His employers made a desperate effort to work around it but it is not financially viable.”
Rooney was also fined £300 and ordered to pay £105 court costs.
