WILMSLOW marks the 60th anniversary of the end of World War Two next week when VJ Day celebrations go ahead, big time.

Thanks to a grant from the Home Front Recall scheme Wilmslow will party on Sunday, October 2.

The community is invited to bask in nostalgia, dance to the tunes of the 1940s and revel in wartime stories and memorabilia.

Main events will be held at Wilmslow High School, starting at 11am and a Civic Service will be held at 3pm at St Bartholomew's Church, conducted by the Bishop of Stockport, the Right Rev Nigel Stocks.

A bus service is to operate to the church where guests will be greeted at the litchgate by a guard of honour from Royal British Legion veterans and soldiers of the Kings Cheshire Regiment who recently served in Iraq.

Standards of the Normandy Veterans Association, Royal British Legion and Cheshire Regiment will be paraded and during the service former Tatton MP Martin Bell, representing the Japanese Labour Camp Survivors Association, is to give a reading.

Afterwards guests will return to the high school for tea and entertainment including a performance from the award winning Alderley Edge Scout Band.

Khumi Burton, spokesman for Wilmslow Lions which organised the tribute said : "I hope everybody comes along to celebrate and salute those who gave their lives and time for us.

"This is an event for the whole community, for those who served in the war and the people who played their part at home," she said.

The celebration has poignancy for Khumi whose family lived in Japan near to the site of the Battle of Kohima.

She added: "Throughout the summer VJ Day parties have been held across the UK and now it is our turn to join in and really make it an occasion to remember."

Events to mark the 60th anniversary of peacetime have sparked wartime nostalgia among many families in Wilmslow and their contribution of memories and memorabilia will be on display at the high school.

And a cake baked especially baked and decorated for the occasion by Inter-Link PLC will be shared.
