The parents of two children fighting a fatal illness have launched a DIY SOS appeal.

Lucy and Mike Carroll, from Poynton, need to build an extension to create more space for Ollie, five, and Amelia, three, as their needs become greater.

Both children have Battens Disease, a rare degenerative condition with no known cure. It means they will lose their speech, mobility and eyesight as they get older.

Since the diagnosis the community has been busy fundraising with a campaign called Ollie’s Army.

Some of this money has gone towards ‘The Big Build’, which will extend the house for the specialist equipment needed to help the children.

Much of the work is being done by Mike himself and volunteer labour, while Fast Hire has donated the use of a digger for the build, but they are appealing for any additional help anyone with skills can provide.

Lucy, 31, said: “The build will be able to create some much needed space for Ollie and Amelia.

“Ollie’s needs are getting greater, he is needing more and more equipment which is big and heavy.

“Mike has had to put work to one side and concentrate on building the extension, this means there will be a massive financial impact on our family, but the biggest impact is the reality of what we are doing and why.”

The Carrolls will also need to move out for three months during some of the build but are struggling to find a suitable house to rent in Poynton.
