OVER 100 BAe Systems workers are to lobby Parliament next Monday, on the same day Macclesfield MP Nicholas Winterton is due to meet Tony Blair in London.

MPs, including those from Stockport, called for the crisis meeting with the Prime Minister last month after BAe Systems announced the shock axe of 993 jobs at their Woodford site.

Winterton will present workers' concerns to the Prime Minister on Monday, supported by Hazel Grove MP Andrew Stunell and Cheadle MP Patsy Calton.

They hope to find a solution which will save jobs at the Chester Road site, where the jobs will be lost.

BAe decided to close its RJX regional jet assembly operation, blaming a downturn in business on the September 11 attacks.

Graham Cain, works convenor for the Confederation of Ship Building and Engineering Unions at Woodford, said: "We are looking for some of the military contracts to be brought forward from the scheduled date and offered to Woodford."

He plans to hold up a banner in support of the workers plight outside Parliament on Monday and distribute leaflets to rally other MPs' support.

But Malcolm Adams, head of communications at BAE in Woodford, said: "The meeting was called by a group of MPs who are quite naturally concerned about their constituents, but we are simply not involved in that process."
