Three friends reunited in mysterious circumstances is the premise of the book by author Paul Barrell.

Paul, 54, from Adlington, wrote Postcards from Pimlico inspired by his memories of events, people and places in London in the 1980s.

It follows college friends Charles, Monty and Ben who lived together in London in that era.

Charles has devastating news when his twin brother John dies and wants the three of them to meet up before the funeral.

The reunion is set in a wine bar in Alderley Edge, which Paul says was inspired by the old Number 15 Wine Bar which was a village institution.

They recall their times together in the 1980s and what happened to them one July night in 1984, but Ben senses they are hiding something and attempts to unravel a mystery.

Paul said: “I felt compelled to write after a good friend suffered the loss of his twin brother John Armstrong.

“It’s about three friends and one dark secret. They are reunited by tragedy for an evening they will never forget.

“I had three exceptional lead characters and a great recollection for 80s London.

“I had literary licence to embellish the story with a few cliffhangers and reveals and I liked the idea that a momentous event like a death would bring old friends back together. I also liked the idea that our past and present are all linked by invisible threads.

“I feel there is more to the novel than the limitless supply of anecdotes and nods to London in that era and my challenge as an author was to weave a thought provoking mystery into the plot.

“I’m very pleased with how it turned out and how the novel is essentially three men in room telling their individual stories.

Paul Barrell's third book, Postcards from Pimlico

It’s the third mystery novel by Paul, a dad of two who started writing in 2007 while on holiday to a remote farmhouse in France where one of the rooms had been converted into a library.

He has a background in sales and hospitality and previous work includes setting up an upmarket wine company that specialised in organic wines.

In 2002 he created Ecosteam, an environmental cleaning company which he ran until 2014.

He said: “I’ve never been on a creative writing course and am self taught although 10,000 hours practice should make you somewhat of an expert.”

The book will be available on Amazon Kindle from April 29.
