Update: The Open House Auction has been postponed due to a family emergency

Work by Grayson Perry, Lucian Freud and Banksy are among the modern pieces of art to be auctioned as part of an open day at a 17th Century Manor house in Cheford.

The artwork, which is on sale alongside an array of 17th and 18th century traditional oak and walnut furniture, will be auctioned by Adam Partridge Auctioneers.

Adam, who has an auction house in Macclesfield, said he excited to uncover the haul of modern art when he was called to the house for a valuation.

He said: “When I was first invited to view the contents of the property I had no idea that some of the most important names in contemporary art would have works within such a traditional looking home.

"Alongside a wonderful 17th Spanish walnut refectory table I saw a Grayson Perry urn and cover flanked by a pair of 16th century bronze lions. In the living room an etching by Lucian Freud hung beside an 18th century Lake District Court Cupboard, and in the hallway stood an incredible bronze figure by Geoffrey Clarke, I couldn’t believe my eyes.”

Other artists represented include Craigie Aitchison,Eduardo Paolozzi and Phillip King.

The auction will have just over 600 lots of furniture, art, garden statuary, lighting, works of art, silver and collectors’ items, as well as a selection of designer clothing. This section includes handbags by Hermes, Fendi, Chanel and Gucci, shoes by Jimmy Choo, Louis Vuitton and Christian Louboutin, and dresses by Gucci, Prada and Christian Dior.

The auctioneers received instruction from actress Davinia Taylor, following the death of her mother Lynne Murphy who owned the property.

She had a remarkable eye in all aspects of design and was a champion of contemporary artists.

The largest example of this is a monumental bronze entitled “Sunroots” which sits at the front of the property.

It was produced by the important international sculptor Phillip King who is a past president of the Royal Academy, and measures a whopping 6

metres by 4 metres, and carries an auction guide of £12,000-£18,000.

Two smaller works by the same artist are also offered in the auction

.

Adam Partridge will lead the auction

Adam added: ”On-site country house auctions such as this were commonplace years ago, but a very rare occurrence these days. Few houses can accommodate the facilities needed to hold an on-site auction, such as room to view, car parking, refreshments etc, but at The Manor House, all these aspects can be easily be arranged, and I look forward to an exciting few days! It also shows how so called “brown furniture” can sit alongside modern works to create a stunning interior, and people should not be afraid to mix old and new.”

The sale starts at 10.30am on Saturday,June 13, with viewings on Thursday 11th and Friday 12th, from 10am-8.00pm.

A catalogue costs £10 and admits two to the view and auction.
