A patchwork of paintings by Macclesfield artists has resulted in a significant donation to the East Cheshire Hospice.

Macclesfield Art Group came up with the idea to recreate an original Charles Tunnicliffe painting by dividing it into 49 sections for each member to reproduce using only black and white.

The final pieces where then put together to create one single piece ‘49 Shades of Grey’ and hung at The Park Tavern on Park Lane. And punters Emma Lawson and partners Daniel Higginbotham were so impressed with the piece, they offered to buy it, with the art group agreeing to donate the full amount to East Cheshire Hospice.

Dave Williams, chairman of Macclesfield Art Group, said: “Members of Macclesfield Art Group had withdrawal symptoms since there was no Barnaby Festival Art Trail this year. So they hit on the idea of reproducing a famous local painting in a novel way.

“The group had originally intended to raffle the painting and donate the proceeds to East Cheshire Hospice, but Emma was determined to buy the picture outright.”

The Art Group hosts its annual exhibition at Macclesfield Library until Saturday, October 24.
