Councillors are appealing against the government’s decision to axe funding for a £850m household waste plant in Cheshire.

After five years of planning, Cheshire East Council was days away from finishing a deal to treat 180,000 tonnes of waste a year with Cheshire West and Chester Council.

The government was to stump up £100m in PFI funding for the waste-fuelled power station but the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs decided to cancel the money in the Spending Review.

CEC leader Wesley Fitzgerald is asking to meet with Defra to try and reverse the decision.

He said: "We are disappointed by Defra's decision as an awful lot of time and work has gone into this joint project.

"We had great faith in this scheme and had achieved a lot.

"However, we will be making every effort to talk with key stakeholders to find alternative ways of reducing landfill."
