A woman was badly hurt in an accident on a zebra crossing which local people have complained is dangerous.

Margaret Ryder is caretaker at the chapel in Styal and was on her way to a funeral there when she was hit on the crossing on Hollin Lane.

A friend who saw the accident said Mrs Ryder was thrown through the air.

She suffered a broken rib and cracked pelvis and was taken to Wythenshawe Hospital.

Mrs Ryder said this week that it was an accident waiting to happen. The crossing was installed just beyond the Altrincham Road junction in 2006. But Styal Village Association and the parish council claim it was put in a dangerous position and have been putting pressure on the council to move it.

They say people crossing the road from the side with  houses cannot see cars travelling from Wilmslow.

Mrs Ryder, who is married to Garry, said:  “It was horrendous. When I looked there was nothing coming.

“All I remember was hearing brakes and feeling something very close to me and seeing something bright. The next thing I knew there were people around me and the ambulance came. We’ve all said for a long time it’s not safe.  Cars coming from Wilmslow are on top of you before you know it.

“I’ve always lived in Styal and know to be cautious on the crossing, but others don’t.

“I’m feeling battered and bruised, but it could have been fatal. Something needs to be done, it could be a child next time.”

John Swinbourne, chairman of the parish council, said:  “The worst case scenario has happened and we need action from the council.”

A council spokesman said:  “The former Chesh-ire County Council built the crossing after consultation with the community. It provided the best visibility for approaching traffic and satisfied Department for Transport guidelines.

“Any other position would have left people to cross Station Road which is much busier.

“The council will respond to letters from Styal Parish Council and we are willing to listen to people’s ideas.

“We are sorry to hear that this lady has been injured and wish her well in her recovery.”

A police spokesman said officers are investigating the accident which happened on Thursday.
