Allotment holders in Alderley Edge say they will continue to fight plans to build a car park on their plots as councillors try to fast-track the development.

The parish council plans to build on Heyes Lane allotments as part of the development at Festival Hall and move the plots to land at Lydiat Lane.

The council is due to take over the allotments when services and assets are devolved from Cheshire East next April – but councillors met with Cheshire East’s assets officer earlier this month to ask for them to be transferred sooner.

Now Coun Frank Keegan has said he is confident the allotment transfer will happen before the April dateline.

"The legal transfers are being worked on and since the decision went through cabinet on September 5, we expect the transfer can happen early in 2012," he said

"We expect to start work on the consultation with the allotment holders before March 31 because there have been almost four months since the decision to transfer was taken.

Coun Keegan added:"We’ve had a meeting with the North West Allotment Society Chairman and he said we should begin consultations as soon as possible. I’m confident Cheshire East will not be a delaying factor in mo ing the project forward."

But allotment holders have formed an action group to fight the plans.

Group member John Sanderson said: "We will keep fighting the plans, we will not give up.

"We hope the transfer will not happen any sooner than planned."

Parish councillors have to ask the minister for local government for permission to build on the allotments.

Coun Keegan added: "There are certain criteria which we will have to meet and we are sure that we meet those.

"It’s for the public good because we are dealing with the village parking situation and we will be able to market the revamped Festival Hall more efficiently."
