AN UP-and-coming downhill mountain bike rider is setting the sport on fire – and he’s determined to keep trail-blazing.

Poynton High School pupil Callum Dew, 17, has just completed his first season in the junior category of the National Points Series finishing 12th overall, against lads two years older.

The A Level student, of Marlborough Drive, Tytherington, also took first overall in the Midland series, winning two races to crown a brilliant year.

Callum said: "I was really pleased with this season to be honest, especially with winning the regional series, it was not what I was expecting to do."

The youngster, who competes for MSC bikes team, often travels across the UK and Europe to compete against some of the best riders, but he aims to do even better next year with regular training in the nearby Peak District.

"I didn’t quite do as well as I thought I could in the national series,"

Callum added. "But I’m hoping for better next year and I’m definitely going to train hard over the winter."

While squeezing in training around the countryside and on Macclesfield’s roads, Callum is busy revising for his final year of A Level exams and he hopes to go to university to study biology.

Dad Dave said: "He has been riding competitively since he was 14 and we’re all really proud of him. Next year we’ll support him in his races and hopefully he can do even better."
