Plans to move the Post Office in Alderley Edge to the Co-op shop in the village have been abandoned.

The Post Office on London Road has been operated by two temporary postmasters while the landlord struggled to find a new tenant.

Residents heaved a sigh of relief when Post Office Ltd ran a consultation earlier this year and announced in June the decision to relocate to the Co-op shop on The Parade.

But this week Post Office announced it will not be going ahead with the move due to Co-op's withdrawal.

A spokesman said: "Alderley Edge Post Office will remain in its existing premises for the time being.

"We remain committed to keeping a Post Office in Alderley Edge."

The spokesman could not yet confirm any alternative locations in the village or why the Co-op has withdrawn.

A spokesman for The Co-operative said: "We have reviewed our position and have come to the conclusion that our food store in Alderley Edge would not provide a satisfactory location for a Post Office.

"We understand that local people may be disappointed by our decision, and we apologise for any inconvenience it may cause."
