A NEW £1m community hub is to be built in Hurdsfield.
Cheshire East Council will redevelop the current family centre on Nicholson Close.
Services operating there now are centred on supporting young families, but under new plans the building will become a community hub bringing together several services and activities.
The project, which could be completed in September 2016, is being funded using £1m from the budget.But the council is hoping to pay for much of the scheme by selling some of the site to Peaks and Plains Housing Trust for a new social housing development.
The plans were progressed at a cabinet meeting earlier this month.
During the meeting Coun David Brown, cabinet member for strategic outcomes, said: “The plans to redevelop Hurdsfield community centre will involve selling off a boarded up asset to fund the development.
“The new building will expand it from a children’s centre to multi-functional, statutory facilities.”
Council leader, Coun Michael Jones, said the investment was much needed.He said: “I was appalled and shocked by the eyesore during a visit to Hurdsfield.”
Coun Ken Edwards, who represents Macclesfield Central, welcomed the plans.
He said: “This is fantastic and a very positive development for Hurdsfield community. It is warmly welcomed. It will be tremendous addition and social asset to the town.”
Hurdsfield was identified as one of five locations in the borough which needed attention during the council’s Creating Stronger Communities Review.
The cabinet agreed to allocate £995,000 to redevelop Hurdsfield as both a family centre and a community hub and authorised its head of communities and the principal manager, Early Help, to proceed with the commissioning of the capital works.
