Some of the town’s top sporting heroes are shortlisted to be BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2016.

Golden couple Jason and Laura Kenny, and Paralympic legend Sarah Storey, are among the 16 nominees announced on Monday after their spectacular performances at Rio 2016.

Laura and Jason, who live in Chelford and wed in Macclesfield in September, have a total of 10 Olympic golds between them.

The pair, who train together at Manchester Velodrome, scooped five of those golds during this summer’s spectacular Games, which saw Team GB finish second in the league table. Laura tweeted: ‘So there we go .. Honoured to be nominated for @BBCSPOTY along with some incredible athletes.’

After three gold medals in Rio this summer, Storey, who lives in Disley, has won a grand total of 14 golds in swimming and cycling. She said: “It’s an understatement to say I am honoured to be on the shortlist and alongside such incredible fellow athletes and as the only road cyclist.”

The trio join a stellar line-up including world number one tennis player Andy Murray, Leicester striker Jamie Vardy, boxer Nicola Adams, footballer Gareth Bale, athlete Mo Farah and gymnast Max Whitlock. The winner will be announced at a ceremony in Birmingham on December 18.
