• UPDATE: Councillors have deferred a decision on all three planning applications submitted by King's.

Councillors have deferred a decision on plans which would allow Kings School to relocate to Prestbury by building housing on its existing sites.

At a crunch meeting of the Strategic Planning Committee at Macclesfield Town Hall this morning councillors said they needed more information to make a decision.

The school submitted three separate applications which would merge its sites at Fence Avenue and Cumberland Street into a new school on 70 acres of green belt next to its Derby Playing Fields in Prestbury.

The proposals included plans for 300 homes at Fence Avenue; and 150 homes at Cumberland Street, on the Westminster Road playing fields which form part of the campus.

Officers recommended the committee refuse all three plans.

Planners said the scheme for 150 homes at Westminster Road lacked affordable housing and lacked adequate financial contribution to pay for the extra strain on local schools.

At Fence Avenue, officers repeated those concerns adding that the new homes would be inappropriate development in the green belt. The new school was recommended for refusal due to the impact on the green belt and traffic.

During the meeting today Kings’ representatives said it would work with the council to amend its offers regarding the Cumberland Street and Fence Avenue Plans

As a result the committee voted in favour of deferring a decision until after these discussions take place.

Councillors also wanted more information on what the school was offering in terms of public open space and the highways impact of plans on Cumberland Street.

Councillors are expected to vote for the third application - a new King's school at Prestbury - to also be deferred.
