An Octogenarian football fan described coming face to face with the FA Cup trophy as 'a dream come true'.

Gwen Eves, 83, has been a massive football fan since her twenties and was a regular at Macclesfield Town FC for many years.

And although she can’t get out to games any more with her husband Allan, 82, she is an avid armchair viewer.

Ahead of the Silkmen’s Second Round tie against Oxford United, Gwen has achieved a lifelong dream of getting her hands on the Emirates FA Cup as it was shown at Macclesfield Town Hall.

Gwen, of Priory Lane, Macclesfield, said: “I’ve always been a big football fan and love the FA Cup. My daughter Pauline called me yesterday and said it was being shown in town and I jumped at the chance to see it up close. It amazing to think that I got to touch a cup that has been handled by so many great players and managers. I couldn’t believe it. It was lovely.”

Gwen worked in Woolworths for more than 30 years before retiring and shared a love of all sports with her husband Allan, a retired sales manager.

She said: “While I have a soft spot for Macclesfield and Man United, I love watching any game. I especially love FA Cup weekend when there are three matches on the TV. And I’ll be cheering on the Silkmen tonight.”

There’s still a chance to grab a picture with the FA Cup trophy today, (December 2) as it is on show at the Moss Rose until 3pm.
