POLICE are hunting for a gang who stole around 1,500 litres of fuel from a council waste depot.

Thieves drained 10 refuse collection vehicles at Commercial Road depot in Macclesfield.

Police believe the raid would have required a group of people using large vehicles over a period of several hours.

It is estimated that 1,500 litres worth up to £1,700 was siphoned off.

Police are now appealing for witnesses following the incident which occurred overnight between February 16 and 17.

Inspector Steve Griffiths said: “It is estimated that 1,500 litres of fuel was stolen valued between £1,200 and £1,700.

“It would have required a number of people, for a number of hours, using large vehicles, to remove that amount of fuel.I would like to appeal to witnesses.”

Staff reported the theft to police at 6.50am when they arrived at work.

A Cheshire East Council spokesperson said: “We can confirm that fuel was stolen from refuse collection vehicles parked at Commercial Road depot.

“The incident occurred between Monday evening and Tuesday morning (February 16/17) and was reported to the police.”
