Around 200 people turned out to pay their respects at the funeral of ‘Bollington legend’ Betty Bonson.

Former MP for Macclesfield Sir Nicholas Winterton, representatives from Bollington Town Council and current Mayor of Bollington Angela Williams were among those present to mark the death of former Bollington Mayor Betty, 88.

Known as ‘Mrs Bollington’, the grandmother-of-three sat on Bollington Town Council for 30 years and remained an honorary councillor until she died on March 8 at Carmel Lodge Care Home, Adlington.

The service took place at St Michael’s Church yesterday (Tuesday, March 29), with donations requested for Dementia UK and the NSPCC, which Betty worked closely with after her mother, Mary Hamson, started the organisation’s Bollington branch.

Speaking after her death, former Mayor of Bollington and friend Sylvia Roberts said: “Betty was a treasure, generous to a fault.

“She was one of life’s enhancers, no airs and graces, common sense, a generous heart and a loyal friend, all wrapped up in one tall, elegant figure.”
