Drivers face five weeks of traffic disruption while work is carried out to repair pavements in the town centre.

From Monday, a one-way system will be put in place all the way down Mill Street while the council gives damaged pavements between Duke Street and Roe Street an overhaul.

The work will renew and relay block paving and replace damaged kerbs so the pavements are safer and look better for residents and visitors.

Workers will replace damaged kerbs with ‘conservation kerbs’, which are in keeping with the character of the town centre.

Businesses will remain open as usual while the works take place and pedestrian access to Macclesfield town centre will be maintained.

For five weeks traffic will only travel one-way down Mill Street towards Duke Street.

Coun David Brown, Cabinet member in charge of highways at Cheshire East Council, said: “The footway improvement works will provide an enhanced walking route for visitors of Macclesfield town centre to enjoy.”

Cheshire East Highways are working with shop owners and businesses to ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum.

Personnel will be available on-site to provide help and advice to members of the public throughout the duration of the improvement works.

Emergency access to the area will be maintained at all times.

If there are any concerns regarding these works contact Cheshire East Highways online at cheshireeast.gov.uk/highways or by phoning 0300 123 5020.

The improvements are planned to commence on Monday October 12 and will last for five weeks.
