A delivery driver has been banned after he swigged vodka before starting work.

David Hadfield, 69, bought a bottle of the spirit on his way to his job as a part-time driver and planned to drink it at night, the court heard.

But the 69-year-old decided to take a swig of it before he was caught by police driving on Mill Lane on August 27.

At Macclesfield magistrates’ court, Hadfield, of Park Mount Close, Macclesfield, admitted drink driving.

Debbie Byrne, prosecuting, said Hadfield’s breathalyser reading was 84mg, more than twice the legal limit of 35mg.

Anthony Derbyshire, defending, said Hadfield’s actions was a ‘complete aberration’.

He said: “The defendant had been out the night before at the Flower Pot with his wife. Later and was invited into a party and started to drink vodka, drinking four neat glasses.”

The court heard that he is retired but volunteers at Treehouse where he cooks every week, and works as a part time delivery driver for a business.

Mr Derbyshire said: “At 9.20am he went to work. He purchased a half bottle of vodka to drink later that night and had a sip.”

Hadfield was banned from driving for 20 months and fined £120.
