A kind-hearted dad has shed a quarter of his body weight to thank a charity which helped his little girl.

Chris Worthington, from Macclesfield, raised more than £500 for When You Wish Upon A Star, which supported his daughter Poppy’s battle with a brain tumour.

He achieved it by completing the Manchester 10km in May.

His commitment to training saw him drop from 19 stone to 14 stone in just a year.

It is the second fundraising effort Chris has embarked on.

Two years ago the lifelong Manchester City fan made headlines by raising £1,500 in sponsorship to have a Manchester United tattoo on his arm.

Chris, 46, said he was motivated from that fundraising experience,

He said: “Two years ago I joked that I got the tattoo because I couldn’t run a marathon. Then I saw people were running marathons for the same charity I was supporting, and thought, I should do something like that.”

Chris followed the popular training app Couch-to-5km and he saw the weight drop off.

He said: “I’ve levelled out now but I feel and look like a different person. I run every day if I can and feel annoyed if I don’t get out for some exercise. It’s such a change from what I was like before.”

With his first 10km done Chris is now setting his sights on a marathon.

Chris, a custody officer for the immigration service, has also kept the tattoo but recently added to it.

He said: “I had thought about getting it covered up, but then I realised that I did it for a good reason and it’s important to be reminded of that. I’ve had the tattooist add the charity’s logo and some poppies to make it look a bit nicer.”
