Drivers face more misery this weekend after the council is set to close ANOTHER major road in Macclesfield.

Improvement works mean the A536 between Macclesfield and Congleton will be closed over the next two weekends.

Cheshire East Council is resurfacing the road between the Ivy Lane junction and Penningtons Lane in Macclesfield.

And to enable other work to be carried out, the busy route between Macclesfield and Congleton will be closed from the Ivy Lane junction to the ambulance station in Congleton on: Friday, March 20, from 7pm to 11pm; Saturday, March 21, from 8am to 6pm and Sunday March 22 from 8am to 11pm.

It will also close the next weekend on: Friday, March 27, from 7pm to 11pm, Saturday, March 28, from 8am to 6pm, and Sunday, March 29, from 8am to 11pm.

The diversion route will follow: A536 Ivy Lane junction, Macclesfield; A536 Park Lane; B5181 Churchill Way; A537 Cumberland Street, Chester Road, Broken Cross, Chelford Road; A34 Congleton Road; Ambulance station junction, A536 Macclesfield Road, Congleton.

Yet the news comes just after work has started on the A523 Silk Road, meaning it was closed yesterday, and will close again tonight and tomorrow night between 7pm and 5am.

Traffic safety officers will also be on hand to assist motorists as traffic disruption will be unavoidable. The council says it is carrying out the work at weekends to minimise disruption.

Councillor David Topping, Cheshire East Council’s Cabinet member for service commissioning said: “We are maintaining and improving our highway assets as part of our continual commitment to the residents who travel through our road network.

“Unfortunately there will be some traffic disruption and we thank businesses, residents and road users in advance for their patience and understanding.”
